The h-index is a way of measuring the productivity and citation impact of the publications. Eftersom h-index bygger på sammanlagd produktion kommer det alltid att växa med tiden: ju längre en forskare har varit aktiv, desto högre blir h-index. Om man vill använda h-index för jämförelser måste man alltså ta hänsyn till tidsdimensionen, och man kan jämföra bara med andra forskare inom samma ämnesområde. The h index was proposed by J.E. Hirsch in 2005 and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. The h index is a quantitative metric based on analysis of publication data using publications and citations to provide “an estimate of the importance, significance, and broad impact of a scientist’s cumulative research contributions.” The h-index can be calculated automatically in Web of Science and Scopus or manually in other databases that provide citation information (e.g. SciFinder, PsychINFO, Google Scholar).
